No Mans Land, The Oklahoma Panhandle, WHY?

Before

after crossing No Mans Land

When Texas sought to enter the Union in 1845 as a slave state, federal law in the United States based on the Missouri Compromise prohibited slavery North of 36°30' parallel north. Under the Compromise of 1850, Texas surrendered its lands north of 36°30' latitude. The 170-mile strip of land was thus left with no formal territorial ownership. It was officially called the "Public Land Strip" and was more commonly referred to as "No Man's Land."

The Compromise of 1850 also established the eastern boundary of New Mexico Territory at the 103rd meridian, thus setting the western boundary of the strip. The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 set the southern border of Kansas Territory as the 37th parallel. This became the northern boundary of No Man's Land. When Kansas joined the Union in 1861, the western part of Kansas Territory was assigned to Colorado Territory, but did not change the boundary.

Outlaws and Sodbusters

In Liberal, Kansas , a "tourist attraction" - the hideout of the infamous Dalton gang.

Dodge City

Thriving rail yard - grain, fertilizers, beef - on the Santa Fe Trail. Decrepit town - many of the stores were Hispanic, except for a Chinese take-out. I can imagine his forebears were railroad workers who have been there since the 1880's.

Boise City, Oklahoma

One of the No -Mans land Dust Bowl towns profiled in Worst Bad Times. Homestead Act opened the migration, aided by the corrupt land promoters and railroad come-ons. This town, said the promoters, was the jewel of the west. Named Boise (French woods) for all the trees. There were artisan wells and the richest soil in the west. The town had been laid out with street lights, and an opera house was underway. Even Germans from Russia were lured there (long story). And after an arduous journey, the settlers found nothing but stakes in a stark and arid grass landscape. Town today isn't much, but is functioning. Many of the small abandoned houses are still standing .

Food Day

Breakfast in Great Bend, Kansas

The owner saw me taking photos and insisted she take a photo of us. Rooster decor seems to be pretty universal for breakfast places across the country.
